Middle School teams showcase their environmental science knowledge at Grand Caverns competition
Community School’s Middle School Envirothon Team competed in the Area I Envirothon at Grand Caverns Park on April 10, 2025, hosted by Headwaters Soil and Water Conservation District. Two teams of middle school students (plus a team of alternates) represented CS, competing in five environmental science categories alongside nine other teams from across the region.
One of our teams — Brooks, Owen, Kye, Maggie, and Isaac — earned second place overall.
The Virginia Envirothon is a statewide natural resources competition that challenges students to demonstrate their knowledge in areas like soils, forestry, aquatics, wildlife, and current environmental issue. At Community School, interested students prepared through a weekly after-school group led by teachers Caleb and Erica. Middle School also hosted an Envirothon Friday Group where students take field trips, learn from guest speakers, and explore what it means to be stewards of the environment.
“We hope this program continues to grow each year,” said Caleb, one of the team’s faculty mentors. “It’s a meaningful way to promote stewardship, conservation, and a deeper appreciation for our natural spaces among our students.”
We are proud of all of our students hard work, growth and efforts. This is the second year Community School has competed and placed in Envirothon, and we look forward to making it a lasting Middle School tradition.
